Goal of the Game
The goal of the game is to obtain a greater score than the opposing teams. By doing so, teams will score touchdowns and accumulate points by answering questions correct. See How to Play below for further instruction.
How to Play
Mathball involves 2-3 teams. This could be one on one, two on two, or a few people per team. Once the teams are established, the teacher will hand out the worksheet corresponding to the topic being taught in class at that time. The students are to write out the questions, show work, and write the answers on the worksheet as the game unfolds. To determine who will go first, the team with the teammate with the closest birthday will go first. Here is how the game will proceed:
The play will continue to alternate between all of the teams until one scores a touchdown. The team will receive 6 points and will be given an option to answer another question for an additional point. If, at any time, a player form another team is disruptive or is playing unfairly, the teacher has the ability to deduct yards/ points or remove the player from the game.
- The first team will select how many yards they would like to attempt (5, 10 or 15). The higher the points, the more difficult the questions will be.
- Each question is to be read aloud and the first team to go will work together to figure out the problem. At the same time, all other players are to be answering the question as well.
- If the team answers correctly, then they get to move up that amount of yards towards their goal.
- If they answer the question incorrectly, the next team up has a change to intercept the amount of yards and answer the question. If the team answers correctly, then they receive the points. If they do not answer correctly, then no one gets the yards and it is considered a “dead ball”.
- Once a question is answered once, it should not be answered again. Be sure to keep piles of already done questions and yet-to-be-done questions separate.
- The next team proceeds with the whole process again regardless if they intercepted or not.
